Some of my friends are working in the game studio released the game with the biggest monthly active audience in the history of computer games.
And they are really cool professionals in programming.
But that’s strange. They are completely not interested in their game and do not want to play it.
Real life situations
One of them said that all employees of the company are forced to test a new game patch, under the threat of fines and reprimands. Otherwise, workers simply do not drive there.
He revealed a small cheat with which they circumvent this rule, this is a laptop. He starts the game on one of the working monitors, then runs ahead and shoots without stopping.
Sometimes the team carried.
In general, his statistics are at an average level and to reproach him for something is hard for him.
At the same time, he solves the working tasks of programming and thus saves 10-20 hours a month, which he spends on the further development of the game product, which he is completely uninteresting and incomprehensible.
Having worked in the company for 3 years and having played hundreds of hours, he absolutely does not represent what the game is about. What does she live and what is important and interesting for the players.
So what’s up? Do not all game developers like their creations? And those who love them, do not engage in development?
Why do companies hire programmers, designers and managers who do not care a lot about the game world?
“I do not welcome the game, I think when a person is playing, he is wasting his time aimlessly”
NoName programmer from Russia
From the first hands
Maybe the thing is that inveterate players are too infantile and can not work for a long time on one task? Maybe they do not have enough knowledge, skills and personal qualities to work on creating such complex projects as the AAA level game?
Preparing this article, I talked with several dozen cool programmers and designers, asking them about their passion for computer games. The smaller part answered that they had not played games for a long time, but the bigger one said that they play several times a week, but they prefer games with short game sessions for 5-20 minutes.
At the same time, everyone is following with interest the novelties of the game world.
The opposite side
However, we know and the reverse cases, when the development of world-famous games are engaged by avid gamers and fans of their business.
John D. Carmack II
The man who drives a red Ferrari, launches a rocket into space, swears and another programmer.
The programmer created more than 44 games in the period from 1989 to 2017. Including such games, about which you may have heard: Quake, Doom and Wolfenstein 3D.
He not only plays games, but sometimes performs in championships.
In 1997 Carmack exhibited the first Ferrari 328 he bought as a prize in the tournament for the first Quake, which was called “Red Annihilation”.
However, John left the car there. The prize was won by a guy named Denis Fongu, with the nickname “Thresh”.
Another interesting example is the company “Riot Games” which in the period from 2008 to 2015 released several games, including the world-famous MOBA “League of Legends”.
“League of Legends” is the official discipline of “World Cyber Games” 2013, 2011, 2010 and “Intel Extreme Masters” 6-9 seasons. And also “DreamHack” in 2014-2011 and many other leagues and events in the field of e-sports.
In 2013, the United States actually equated professional players “League of Legends” to professional athletes. The country agreed to issue “P-1” athletes’ visas, which also give out to NBA, NFL, NHL players.
This recognition from one of the largest countries in the world is considered one of the turning points in the history of the recognition of e-sports.
On the official website of the company, in the section “Careers”, they write:
“Applicants should first learn about Riot and play League of Legends because we’re looking for people who, like us, take play seriously and for whom it’s never” just a game. ” We play lots of games, especially our own, because hands-on gaming experience is our ultimate guiding compass “.
About the same not just mentioned in various interviews. Ie they do not need just developers. They need hardcore gamers, because only they know how to make the game better for players, and not for a group of investors.
Personally, we, in the “Take Games Studio” is constantly playing. Play World of Tanks, Overwatch, The Witcher III, World of Warcraft, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Need for Speed, Mass Effect, TES V Skyrim and much more.
And judging by the feedback from our customers, who need a game outsourcing, we clearly do our work and come up with new features, which are not originally thought.
What do you think?
An avid gamer is a bad infantile worker or is this a real find for a game studio and only teams of such developers can create game masterpieces?
